How much does coach hire with driver cost in Europe?
Published
There is no single price list for coaches in Europe. Every quote is built from the same few parts, and once you know them you can read any price, compare offers fairly and see where a plan can be made cheaper.
The five things that set the price
Almost every coach quote in Europe is the sum of these parts:
- Vehicle size: a minibus, a midi coach or a full-size coach. A bigger vehicle usually costs more per day but less per traveller.
- Time: how many hours the coach and driver are booked, from the first pickup to the last drop-off.
- Distance: kilometres driven, including the empty drive from the depot to the first pickup and back.
- Road costs: motorway tolls, vignettes, city coach permits and parking.
- Driver costs on long days or multi-day trips: a second driver, or the driver's hotel and meals.
Transfer, full day or multi-day
A transfer, such as an airport to a hotel, is usually priced as a short block of time with a minimum charge. A full day usually covers 8 or 9 hours and about 200 km. A multi-day tour adds the driver's overnight costs for every night away from home.
Short transfers cost more per hour than a full day, because the coach cannot easily take another job around them. If the group needs several transfers on the same day, booking the coach for the day is often cheaper.
Why the same trip costs more in some months
Prices follow demand. Spring and early summer, trade-fair weeks and the Christmas-market season are busy across Europe, and coaches in popular cities are booked weeks ahead. In quieter months there is more choice and the price is often lower.
Country matters too: driver wages, tolls and VAT on passenger transport differ from one country to the next, so the same distance does not cost the same everywhere.
How to keep the price down
- Choose the vehicle by luggage and passengers, not one size up 'to be safe'.
- Keep each day inside one driver's legal working time so no second driver is needed.
- Combine nearby transfers into one booking instead of several separate ones.
- Send dates early for busy seasons and events.
Reading our estimated prices
Each route below shows an estimated one-way 'from' price for the cheapest vehicle on that route. It includes the driver, fuel and typical tolls; any parking in it is only a general allowance, most short transfers include none, and city permits are not included. After you send your trip we confirm a licensed local coach company for your date and send the final price before any payment.
