School trip coach hire in Europe: a checklist for teachers

Published

On a school trip the coach is the classroom between visits. A clear plan sent early helps you get the right vehicle and a clear final price before any payment.

Count everyone

Every student, teacher and accompanying adult needs a seat; there is no standing on European coaches. Add the guide if there is one, and keep two or three seats free for bags carried on board.

Safety on board

  • Where seat belts are fitted, everyone must wear them, students included.
  • Agree a head count at every stop before the coach leaves.
  • Keep a printed list of names and emergency contacts on the coach.
  • Tell us about wheelchairs or other special needs before booking, so we can check what is available for your date.

Plan days around the driver's hours

European rules limit how long a driver may drive and how long the driver's day may last before the night's rest. Waiting during long museum visits still counts towards that day, so a day that starts early and ends late may need a second driver or a shorter plan. Keep driving days and visit days balanced.

Day trips that work well for school groups

  • Paris to Versailles: about 22 km, a half-day or full-day visit.
  • Berlin to Potsdam: palaces and gardens close to the city.
  • Prague to Kutná Hora: about 80 km, a UNESCO town for history classes.
  • Florence to Pisa and Madrid to Toledo: short drives, big classroom value.

What to send for a price

Search your main route for an estimated price with a vehicle that fits. Then send the dates, the number of travellers, the hotel and the visits for each day with 'Check availability', and we check availability and send the final price before any payment.
