Prague – Vienna – Budapest by coach: a five-day plan

Published

Prague, Vienna and Budapest sit on one line through central Europe, with driving legs of under four hours. One coach can carry the group and its luggage the whole way.

Day by day

  • Day 1: arrival at Prague Airport, about 17 km to the city. Afternoon in the old town.
  • Day 2: day trip to Český Krumlov, about 170 km each way, or a shorter visit to Kutná Hora.
  • Day 3: Prague to Vienna, about 330 km and under 4 hours. Arrive for an afternoon on the Ringstrasse.
  • Day 4: Vienna to Budapest, about 245 km and under 3 hours, with a stop on the way if you like.
  • Day 5: Budapest and transfer to Budapest Airport, about 20 km.

One coach or local coaches?

A coach that stays with the group carries the luggage between cities and usually keeps the same driver. The price includes the driver's hotel and the empty drive back at the end. If the group flies or takes the train between cities, separate local transfers in each city are usually cheaper.

Tolls and borders

Czechia, Austria and Hungary each charge distance-based motorway tolls for coaches; each route estimate allows for typical tolls, not the exact toll in every country crossed, and the final price we send before any payment states them. All three countries are in the Schengen area, so there is no regular passport control between them, but Austria has carried out temporary checks at its borders with Czechia and Hungary for several years and the coach may be stopped briefly. Every traveller must carry a valid passport or national ID card.

Keeping the days comfortable

The Český Krumlov day is the longest. Keep it free of other visits so it stays within one driver's day. Send the full plan with 'Check availability', listing every stop and date in the notes, and we check availability for the whole route and send the final price before any payment.
