What is included in a coach hire quote?

Published

Two coach quotes for the same trip can look very different because they include different things. Before comparing prices, check what each one covers.

Usually included

  • The vehicle and a professional driver.
  • Fuel for the kilometres in the plan, including the drive from the depot.
  • The driver's working time for the hours in the plan.

Often added separately — ask about these

  • Motorway tolls and vignettes, which differ by country.
  • City coach permits, for example to drive into Rome's coach zones or to park or wait in Paris.
  • Parking at sights, airports and hotels.
  • Waiting time beyond the plan, such as a late flight or a long dinner.
  • The driver's hotel and meals on multi-day trips or late finishes.
  • A second driver when the day is longer than one driver may legally work.
  • VAT, which applies to passenger transport at different rates in different countries.

Questions to ask before you accept

  • Does the price include tolls, parking and city permits for every stop?
  • How many hours and kilometres are included, and what does an extra hour cost?
  • Who pays for the driver's hotel and meals on overnight trips?
  • Is VAT included in the final figure?

How our estimate is built

The estimated price on each route includes the driver, fuel, typical tolls and a second driver when the route's driving time or distance is too long for one; any parking in it is only a general allowance, most short transfers include none, and city permits are not included. The final price we send after checking availability, before any payment, lists what is included and what would be charged extra, such as waiting time beyond the plan.
